How to Build Your Own Online Store With Shopify in 20 Minutes or Less
Shopify has made building an online store easier for non-tech entrepreneurs as well. Just follow the steps and your online store will be ready to go live in no time.
If you are building the site for the first time, opt for the 14-day free trial to better understand how Shopify works. You can choose your plan letter. You can learn all you need to know about Shopify Plans here.
STEP 1: Go to Shopify.com
Go to the Shopify website, shopify.com, click on the “Start free trial” button.
STEP 2: Give Your Store a Name
Have you decided on the name of your store? Well, if not, now is the time. Give a name to store. Put your email address, password, and your Store’s Name.
(I chose “GAJewels” name (demo name) for absolutely no reason.)
In the next step, you will be asked to add some information about your business.
You can skip the step as well.
However, it’s always a better idea to add as much information as you can. Choose the right options from the dropdown of two questions:
- Are you already selling?
- What is your current revenue?
STEP 3: Add An Address, So Shopify Can Calculate Sales Tax And Payments
Fill in the required information:
- Your full name,
- Complete address, and
- Phone number.
Shopify uses this information to configure the tax rates and currencies.
It’s optional to add your business or personal website. If you have one, you can add.
Once you’re done, click “Enter Store”.
STEP 4: Set Up Your Store
Now, you are at the backend of your first eCommerce store.
As you can see, it has an easy-to-use interface.
Here, you can add products, customize your store design and can also add domain.
STEP 5: Add Products to Your Store
To add products, click on the “Add product” button. You will be redirected to a product adding a page where you need to fill the following details to add a product:
- Compared at price
- Cost per item
- Inventory Policy
- Weight: To calculate rates of shipping at checkout
- Customs Information: In case of international shipping
- Variants: You can add variant if your product has different versions such as color or size
- Search engine listing preview: You can add a title and description to check how this product appears in a search engine listing.
Put your products name in the Title and write detailed and appealing description.
Now, upload beautiful images of your product on the website. You can add multiple images. Remember, product images impact your sales so upload high-quality images of the products.
Just drag and drop to change the sequence of the images.
Now set the price of the product. If it is on sale, add the old price in the “compare at price” box.
Tick “Charge taxes on this product” option to let Shopify add the sales tax (based on your location).
Create SKU of each product and enter in the specified box. SKU helps in identifying each product.
Now add variant of the product (if available). You can add variants such as color, size and material.
After adding all the details, don’t forget to click the “Save” button, else your product won’t be added. You can even organize products based on their category.
For example, I have added Category earrings, ring, and Necklace and have added one product in each category. The organization section is on the right side of the screen.
You can also add vendor’s name to organize products accordingly.
Go to product section to see list of all the products.
Add all the products that you want to start selling.
Done adding all the products?
It’s time beautify your products.
STEP 6: Design Your eCommerce Store
Click on “Home” button from left panel to return to the main dashboard.
Click on the “Customize theme” button to customize your store look.
A theme customization page will open. You will get three options to choose themes from:
- Upload Theme (If you have a theme, you can upload it)
- Free Themes (Shopify offers a range of free themes which you can choose to get started with)
- Paid Themes (You can choose the perfect theme from hundreds of theme collection. A paid theme costs you around $180)
If you are trying things out, click on “Visit theme store”.
Here you will get options of all the themes. You can choose to browse by collection or by industry and can use filter options to find what you are looking for.
As I am creating a jeweler store, I opted for the “Jewelry & Accessories” industry and filtered for free themes.
I got two options and chose one.
Check each feature and functionalities offered by the theme. View demo. If you like the theme click on “Add theme”. Don’t worry you can always change your theme.
You can add and remove sections on each page as per your choice and need.
How simple is that!
STEP 7: Choose Your Domain
Return to the main dashboard and click on “Add Domain”
Shopify by default gives you a domain “your-store-name.myshopify.com”.
If you want, you can buy a new domain of your choice at a price as low as $14/year (given your domain name is available).
You can even connect an existing domain easily by clicking on the option and putting the domain you want to connect with, in the relevant box.
Once your domain is activated, you can check your website. However, you need to do one more thing before announcing the official opening of your eCommerce store.
STEP 8: Activate Your Payment Processor
Click on the “Settings” button available on the bottom left of the dashboard.
Depending on your country, you will get multiple option pf payment processors to choose from.
Shopify eCommerce platform also has its own payment processor which is very easy to implement. All you need to do is walk through the steps to activate your payment processor. It will allow you to accept payments securely.
You are all set. Now click on the “Launch Website” button to make the store live. Don’t forget to share your new eCommerce store with us.
